C took the majority of these photos, glimpses into everyday life in Japan. Nobody knew we were watching them, aside from the top image. It's fascinating to watch people going about their daily business. This is my favourite image, some school boys on a trip to Miyajima, so carefree and un-self-consciously happy.
This was atop the ruins of a castle, the boys playing make-believe with stick-swords, defending the fort.These poor homeless men, begging is seen as profoundly shameful, so they do not ever ask people for help. C would seek them out to give them money for food (or food if we had some handy). They took pride in their makeshift homes, sweeping their surroundings to keep it neat and tidy. Many had pet cats.
